“NYE LA 2014” by Akiko Yamashita (2014)
Grand Park is a 12 acre park in downtown Los Angeles that opened in 2012. It stretches over several blocks connecting city hall to the stretch of Grand Avenue that is home to the Walt Disney Concert Hall, MOCA, The Music Center, The Ahmanson, and now The Broad. “The Park for Everyone”, events are curated by the The Music Center with a mission of featuring local arts and community. In 2013, Akiko, associated with the collective mapjacks, approached the park staff about projection mapping onto city hall. They commissioned her to create projections for their first ever New Year’s Eve party. The event was a wild success. 20,000 people attended. This proved that Angelenos will turn out for public events, and the success of the event appears to be an important step toward attracting Jay Z’s Made in America event to Grand Park Labor Day 2014. YouTube / Zach Behrens – via Iframely Grand Park, however, took exception to Akiko taking credit for the installation. Consequently, it has been erased from Akiko’s website and no official documentation of the event can be found online. |
