Such media&nbsp;are likely to remain viewable&nbsp;for many more years than the software remains functionally executable. This page lists 3 techniques, for preparing:<\/p>\n<ul><li><em>Screenshot images<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Screengrabbed videos<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Animated GIFs<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul><hr><h2><strong>Making and Saving Canvas&nbsp;Images<br><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You can take a screenshot of your software&nbsp;with an external tool, or sometimes from within the app itself. You can then use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dwphotoshop.com\/photoshop\/screenshot.php\">Photoshop<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/omitsoft.blogspot.com\/2008\/03\/taking-screenshots-with-gimp.html\">Gimp<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pixlr.com\/editor\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pixlr<\/a> (in a browser) or any number of utilities to crop and adjust the image. All operating systems have a native screenshot function. In <a href=\"http:\/\/p5js.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">p5.js<\/a>, you would use <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/p5js.org\/reference\/#\/p5\/saveCanvas\" target=\"_blank\">saveCanvas<\/a>() or <a href=\"http:\/\/p5js.org\/reference\/#\/p5\/saveFrames\" target=\"_blank\">saveFrames<\/a>().<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr><h2><strong>Making Screen-Grabbed Video<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>To record video of your app running, you will need a screen recording application:<\/p>\n<ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M6Me2V8oUbc\">QuickTime X<\/a>: Mac (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.askdavetaylor.com\/record_mac_screen_capture_recording_movie_quicktime_player.html\" target=\"_blank\">tutorial here<\/a><\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techsmith.com\/camtasia.asp\">Camtasia<\/a>: Win, Mac<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telestream.net\/screen-flow\/overview.htm\">ScreenFlow<\/a>: Mac<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambrosiasw.com\/utilities\/snapzprox\/\" target=\"_blank\">SnapZ Pro X<\/a>: Mac<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.araelium.com\/screenflick\/\" target=\"_blank\">ScreenFlick<\/a>: Mac<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>After you have recorded your video, it might be nice to do some editing. Consider using Premiere, AfterEffects, FinalCut, iMovie, Windows Movie Maker, etc. A voiceover and\/or subtitles can be especially<br>\n helpful.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have made a screen-grabbed video, consider adding a soundtrack, or a narration in which you are explaining what&rsquo;s going on. You will then need to upload it to a host such as YouTube or Vimeo.<\/p>\n<hr><h2><strong>Making Animated GIFs&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Animated GIFs are robust, simple, and durable ways to document moving<br>\n imagery. The easiest way to make one, is to screengrab directly to an<br>\nanimated GIF with <strong>LICEcap<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cockos.com\/licecap\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.cockos.com\/licecap\/<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another alternative is&nbsp;to&nbsp;save out a sequence of frames, such as with the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/p5js.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">p5.js<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/p5js.org\/reference\/#\/p5\/saveFrames\" target=\"_blank\">saveFrames<\/a>() function, and compile these into an animated GIF.
