Our idea revolves around exploring the changing of the seasons with an emphasis on Spring and Summer. We open with the end of Winter by showing the bridge in white to represent snow, and having it slowly melt into spring. We then have bright Spring flowers popping up as the bloom and transition into a willow tree swaying in the wind. The Summer rain then comes in and transitions into a Summer storm with lightning but then gets washed away by an ocean wave. After the storm and the wave end, the sun comes out and moves in the sky and then we settle into lush green leaves swaying in the wind. Finally, the green leaves change into Autumn colors and fall to the ground and the seasons are complete.

Our project takes the audience on a journey through space. We take off, travel through all the planets, and experience an explosive ending. Galactic brings the night sky down to Pittsburgh in an interpretive and an expressive way.

Here is the link to our testing video. There are three main sections to the video: waves, lightning, and snow melting into spring. Our main goals were to see how the effects worked or didn’t work, and if the colors were matching our expectations.

We have decided to use the two methods due to various background levels. Because our theme is about space, we want to evoke the feeling of adventure and curiosity as you explore the planets. There will be strobes of color that are vibrant and fun.

Our main sections:

  • Taking off: The lights turn on and then a strobe of colors go through to signify the rocket taking off.
  • Stars Streaking: There will be a transition where the stars will start to glimmer and then the sun will appear.
  • Sun: The solar flare will start with the center of the bridge

Timeline:

  • Taking Off
    1. Start off with no lights
    2. Streak of red, blue, and black will appear to represent the rocket ship
    3. You can see the background changing from blue (Earth) to black when it has reached outer space
  • Each of the planets
  • Mercury
  • Venus
  • Earth
  • Mars
  • Jupiter
  • Saturn
  • Uranus
  • Neptune
  • Pluto
  • Climax
    • Starting from when Pluto is shown as a single light in the distance
    • It slowly grows bigger and moves toward the center
    • Eventually it explodes in a big flash of white and then rainbow
    • Fade to Black

Questions:

  • Given the linear fashion in which the lights are assembled, how should we mimic the rounded shape of the planets? Or do we leave it abstract?

Our theme is emotions where we’ll display six emotions: Happiness, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, Anger, and Surprise. The transition between emotions will be smooth hue shifts which blend color from previous emotion to the next.

Proof-of-concepts

Anger:

  • Starting with colors like red, orange and yellow with a pattern of flicker which simulates burning fire. As the shades of colors get darker and darker, the emotion is getting more intense. Then we will transition to even darker colors, close to black, and end with an explosion effect.

Happiness:

  • Created a narrative of a sunny day that starts with a sun across a blue sky, moving to a field of blowing grass, and ending with a blooming of radiant purple flowers

Disgust:

  • A representation of approaching a swampy body where fumes are consuming and bubbles are popping and when one does, covers the entire bridge with its sludge.

Implementation Questions

  • How can we coordinate audio without visuals? We feel that currently there is an effective representation of emotion in our project, but are curious how another form of media could further evoke the emotion from the viewer?
  • The flicker effect has been used a far amount in our preliminary design, how will this be displayed on the bridge?

If we find that we require some more complicated effects that aren’t achievable with Pharos, we will use the python method.

Our theme revolves around the theme of seasons with main emphasis on Spring and Summer. We want to evoke feelings of joy and happiness from our audience and plan to achieve that through the vibrant colors of Spring/Summer.

Our key ideas:

  • Flowers blooming —> lights turning on panel by panel
  • Petals in the wind —> a pulse of color
  • Willow tree moving in the wind
  • Blooming energy into flowers
  • Ocean waves moving

The general timeline of how the events will be placed:

  1. Winter to Spring transition [Show start]
    1. Start with white winter
    2. Snow melting into Spring colors?
      1. Spots of white fade into greenish colors, the spots slowly grow large until all the white (snow) has disappeared
  2. Spring
    1. Flowers blooming
      1. Lights turning on panel by panel
    2. Willow swaying in the wind
    3. Flower petals drifting in the wind in a similar way as the wave in summer
  3. Spring to Summer transition
    1. A wave of water washing over the spring colors
      1. Can occur slowly or quickly
  4. Summer
    1.  (need help)
    2. Summer rain?
  5. Summer to Fall transition [Show end]
    1. Fall color “wave” of leaf progression from green → yellow → orange → brown
    2. Then the brown leaves “fall” and the show ends

Some questions we still have regarding implementation are as follows:

  • Are there any other thematic elements that would make our performance stronger?
