Notes from Day 10

Brainstorming was a lot of fun; today we bring it right down to earth in what is mostly a work day.

Agenda

  1. Administrative

    • Clearances! To date I have received 13 out of the required 48 documents.

    • Museum observation visit dates: Friday Oct 4 and Saturday Oct 5. On both dates we’ll meet at 9:45 AM in the lobby for a 10AM opening, then observe for roughly 90 minutes.

    • The museum is reachable via public transit, e.g. #54 at 8:41AM on Craig Street. See bus search.

    • Quick poll on possible TA hours: would it help to have a lab TA available Saturday 3-5PM, and/or Wednesday afternoons (e.g. 3:30-6:30 between classes)?

    • Quick poll: are you still using laptops in class?

    • Purchasing. Limited special orders will be considered; best are materials which we could generally stock for the class and share.

  2. Assignments

  3. In-class

    • Meet with your partner for the first hour.

      1. ((Quincy, Patricia), (Halanna, Hagan), (Wenqing, Spencer), (Katherine, Xiang), (Omisa, Julian), (Tushhar, Jai), (Sophia, Griffin), (Caio, Edward))

      2. Quickly, what’s the general idea?

      3. Draw it.

      4. Try Why-How Laddering (alt: Why-How Method).

      5. In what ways does it support open-ended outcomes, autonomy, and initiative?

      6. Draw it again.

      7. What’s the size and scale?

      8. Is there more than one device involved?

      9. What materials do you think you could use?

      10. Can you make a mockup out of cardboard?

      11. Is there anything we or you need to buy?

  • At 10:30AM, each pair will briefly present their idea for discussion.

    1. Please come to the whiteboard.

    2. Sketch your idea.

    3. Give a brief synopsis (30 seconds) of the experience.

    4. Identify what you consider the greatest technical challenge.

    5. Class: what sounds unresolved to you?

    6. Class: ask neutral questions about the work.

  • Any remaining time is work time.
