Prompts

For everyone, let’s pin down conceptual details:

  1. what is the working title?

  2. how does it communicate its affordances? i.e., how does it attract and teach its own use?

  3. how does it scale to multiple simultaneous users?

  4. how long do you expect interaction to last?

Functional considerations:

  1. how many actuated freedoms?

  2. how many unactuated freedoms?

  3. what kind of pivots or joints?

  4. what are the specific actuators?

  5. what are the specific sensors?

  6. what kind of power requirements?

General considerations:

  1. can you avoid glue?

  2. can you design a structure which allows interior access?

  3. are the moving parts supported by sturdy bearing structures?

  4. where are the limit stops, i.e. what collides first internally?

  5. where does the computing go?

  6. where are the wires anchored for strain relief?

Marble Run

  1. what’s the shortest path to testing the noisemaker?

  2. can you rig an unactuated tilting tray to test the barriers?

  3. how many marbles?

Helicopter/Puddle Jumper

  1. how fast do you need to spin it?

  2. how does the logic of the game connect to the launch?

  3. what’s the loading/resetting process?

Fish and Whale

  1. how fast do the jaws move?

  2. how does the process reset?

Rock’Em Sock’Em Boxing

  1. how fast do the ‘fists’ move?

  2. how are successful blows indicated physically?

  3. are successful blows sensed?

Ping-Pong Ball Alligator

  1. what’s the fastest path to rigging a ball launcher?

  2. how fast do the jaws need to move?

Whack a Mole

  1. what’s the simplest toggling spring mechanism to drive both up and down quickly?

  2. how do you sense a successful strike?

  3. is there a traditional gameplay session or is it just a perpetual plaything?

Sand Spiral

  1. will you be mixing colors? what happens after they blend?

  2. is it goal-oriented or meditative?

  3. can it be used in reverse?

  4. can it have an automatic mode?

Puking/Pooping Dinosaur

  1. what’s the range of locomotion behavior? can it walk? does it just rear up?

  2. puking or pooping or both?

  3. what’s it do to encourage feeding?
