Day 25: (Mon Dec 5, Week 15) Children’s School Machine Test

Notes for 2022-12-05.

New Assignments

  1. New assignment, due Wednesday: please prepare a five-minute presentation on the outcome of your project to begin your project critique. The recommended mode is to use a draft of your final report post for visual content, but you may prepare separate slides if you wish. Please focus on the specifics of how your project evolved in response to the children. Please also address how it explores the central course themes of building human-centric experiences through mechanical and computational processes.

Note of advice: please avoid claiming your project is “successful”; it is always better to be specific and present observations which build your case. Making broad claims puts an audience on the defense because you are telling them how to think; showing them evidence brings them naturally to your conclusions.

  2. New assignment, due Friday: Final Project Report.

Administrative

Today’s class is devoted to testing at the Children’s School. The schedule is similar to last time.

Schedule:

  • 12:20-1:00 set up projects in school

  • 1:00 start testing with 4s and Ks

  • 1:30 start testing with 3s

  • 1:50-2:10 pack up and return projects to lab

General notes:

  1. Everyone: please bring your own extension cord. Power strips will need plug covers on unused outlets; either avoid them, keep them small, or use every socket.

  2. Children will rotate between stations every five minutes or so.

Locations:

  1. Green Room carpet areas:

    • Inflatable Skeeball

    • Modular Marble Run

  2. Kitchen: Marble Painter

  3. Discovery Area (outside the red, blue, and green classrooms)

    • Magnet Box. Small table requested.

    • Megaslide. Smooth floor requested.

Overall: we’ll need to be fast and efficient. Please be as self-sufficient and resourceful as possible. I still highly recommend thinking through setup and writing out a checklist. And please keep me informed about any last-minute problems.
