In-Class Exercise: Body Movement

Solo Movements

Using two arms:

  1. deep breath and stretch

  2. slow moves side to side

  3. slow moves up and down

  4. slow opposites up/down (diagonal lines)

  5. slow move up, fast float down

  6. quick twitch side to side

  7. bring hands together in and out sideways (folding)

  8. circular hands, alternating top and bottom

  9. slowly collapse to the floor

Pair Movements

  1. Mirroring. Neither lead nor follow, but perform together:

    1. slow moves side to side

    2. slow moves up and down

    3. slow opposites up/down (diagonal lines)

    4. slow move up, fast float down

    5. slow move up, hold and pause; then finally slowly down


  2. Turn-taking. Without speaking, allow the focus to pass back and forth:

    1. left hand circle, followed by right hand circle

    2. pushing forward with both hands

    3. alternating elbows

    4. pass an invisible ‘token’ back and forth as fast as possible.


  3. Free play!


  4. Variations:

    1. Accelerando: while mirroring, bring the tempo faster to a limit

    2. Decelerando: while mirroring, bring the tempo slower to a limit

    3. Diminuendo: while mirroring, make the movements smaller and smaller to a limit
