The original motion created with my hands – bringing in two separate ends of cloth and thrusting them together – relied on horizontal movement. I learned that the closest I could get using the capstan bench was trying to raise or lower two ends of the cloth simultaneously, then raising or lowering the middle section as needed. A lot of my time was spent figuring out how to properly rig the bench. One end of thread would often raise, but not the other, even if they were on the same capstan. The most effective solution was often to press buttons in rapid succession, manually lower the fabric, and try again.
