Initially while exploring basic gathering and shirring techniques, I had started to experiment how the fabric might react with holes ripped in the middle of the fabric, with the fabric shirred at different densities, and with random patterns of gathering. Mostly, I got a variety of vaguely flower fabric clumps which didn’t provide particularly interesting interactions. However, after some more experimentation, I discovered what I appreciated most about shirring and gathering was that these methods provided us a way to manipulate the density and thus the weight of certain areas of the square of fabric. Therefore, for my exploratory video, I tightly shirred one half of the fabric square while very lightly gathering the other half. I discovered when hung appropriately the tightly shirred part would hide in the loose part of the cloth, almost as a caterpillar in a cocoon. I then played on this motif to create the final video.
