I was interested in exploring various levels of explicitly human behavior. Of the three attempts I made, they slowly became more and more human with each iteration. I found this process to be both interesting and challenging. I slowly had to learn how the fabric interacts with the inflatable in order to understand how to bond the two together for the desired effect. This took me especially long to figure out for the final iteration where I was trying to do something similar to mimicking breath. Bonding the fabric to the inflatable in different and multiple locations greatly changed the outcome. This can be seen as my bonds become more complex with each attempt.

Iteration 1

The first attempt reminded me of a palm tree moving in the wind from some angles and a bug from other angles. I prefer to think of it as a swaying palm tree. I find that visual much more calming which represents more how this particular iteration made me feel.

Iteration 2

I think this was my favorite of all my iterations. This one was the most simple in making, but I feel like it came out to be the most expressive. I like to call it “Spoken Over”. In my mind, this little creature has their mouth open, ready to share something, but others keep speaking over them and each time they try again, they bow their head and sigh as someone speaks before they get the chance again. I feel like I was able to relate to this one the most with it being so simple in creation and execution.

Iteration 3

This final iteration was by far the hardest for me. This simple fabric doll that I had sewn had little space on the inside for much stuffing, let alone an inflatable. It also took me many attempts of different tape positions to understand that the tape needed to be connected to both the front and back of the body in order to simulate the breathing effect. Once successful, I was very pleased with this outcome, even if it’s hard to notice the breathing over video.
