Does a self-aware machine create a certain image (or self-image) of itself?  Therefore, is a machine able to make us believe what it wants us to believe in?&#8221;  -Andreas Lutz<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andreas Lutz is a German artist and experimental musician exploring human machine interaction and communication in his works. It utilizes two contrasting white light sources to illuminate the &#8220;primal thoughts&#8221; from opposite directions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.ideate.cmu.edu\/16-376\/s2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Monolith-YW-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7584\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.ideate.cmu.edu\/16-376\/s2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Monolith-YW-5.jpg 960w, https:\/\/courses.ideate.cmu.edu\/16-376\/s2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Monolith-YW-5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/courses.ideate.cmu.edu\/16-376\/s2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Monolith-YW-5-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/courses.ideate.cmu.edu\/16-376\/s2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Monolith-YW-5-508x339.jpg 508w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>2020-2022 \u2014 Kinetic Sculpture, dim. 120 x 120 x 140cm:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actuators, LED lights, stretchable fabric, trained artificial neural network, custom software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Application to Kinetic Fabrics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although not apparent immediately even from the video, this work relies on an artificially trained neural network based on 25 binary states to inform its motions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It effectively &#8220;creates&#8221; expressions in this way allowing the piece to always produce a new experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While hopefully not as complicated as a neural network, we can perhaps adapt similar techniques allowing our creations to choose or randomly generate motions to constantly evolve fabric motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The piece also effectively uses only 2 LED lights to create space and atmosphere with shadows through the thin matted fabric.
