Day 5: (Tue Jan 27, Week 3) Class Meeting Cancelled Due to Weather

Notes for 2026-01-27.

I’m sorry, but due to a collision of weather, school, and travel schedules I cannot make it to campus. I don’t think a remote session would be worthwhile this week, so I’m cancelling the Tuesday class meeting.

Assignments

In lieu of the meeting, I would like you to read two things:

  1. Please read the second chapter entitled “Some Simple Figures” from the book An Introduction to Tensegrity by Anthony Pugh [R9].

    File: Some Simple Figures.

If you want to see more I have the whole book in chapters: An Introduction to Tensegrity.

  2. Please browse the artwork photos in Kenneth Snelson’s book Art and Ideas [R11].

    File: Art and Ideas.pdf

It is also freely available at http://kennethsnelson.net/.

I would like us to explore tensegrity structures as a means of creating support structures using parsimonious means. Many kinetic textile works we saw last week involved overhead support, and it isn’t always available. It may also be possible to experiment with actuating these structures. Although Kenneth Snelson is mostly using steel tube and cable, we could use dowels and fabric.

Please note, the submission date for the Exercise: Social Medium is extended to Thursday. Please submit videos to Exercise 3 Shared Folder.
