Design/Build

Tuesday March 21

The task of each team is to design a free standing frame made of newspaper, in which the entire team can stand upright together. The frame must enclose the team on all sides as well as above. It does not need to have a floor or walls. The team must be able to enter and exit the intact structure.

Each team will have 10 full-sized sheets of newspaper per team member, plus 10″ of masking tape for each team member. If you forgot to bring your ten sheets of newspaper, I will have some extra.

You may not talk to anyone who is not on your team.

By the end of this class, each team must give me construction drawings and instructions for their structure. The build instructions must be written on official RPD Design/Build forms. The team letter, team member names, page number and section letter must be written on every sheet. The instructions and drawings, plus the unused newspaper and masking tape, must be sufficient to construct the structure as designed. Any newspaper that has been used to construct prototypes, if it cannot be returned to its original flat folded state, will be recycled immediately.

The construction team will not have rulers, calculators, etc. You can assume that they will have only pens and pencils.

Thursday March 23

The task of each team is to build the free standing structure designed by another team using their instructions, their remaining newspaper and their remaining tape.

You may not talk to anyone who is not on your team.

Be sure to check the scoring rubric before you start to design or build.
