Perfect Cardboard Cube

Perfect 2″ x 2″ Cardboard Cube

Please be careful not to cut the tables or get glue on them

Assemble the materials you will need for this exercise

• package of Exacto blades and Exacto knife
• metal straight edge
• cutting mat
• 30-60-90 or 45-45-90 triangle
• white glue
• sheet of cardboard

Familiarize yourself with the medium you are using, that is, cardboard.

• Look at the cardboard and understand it
• Note how it is constructed. Note that it has a grain.
• Cardboard:
• consists of three layers: a ridged inner structure sandwiched between two smooth faces;
• is strongest parallel to ridges; and
• is weakest perpendicular to ridges.
• Take a scrap piece of cardboard:
• Using the metal straight edge as a guide, cut the cardboard with a new blade.
• Do not use much pressure; Do not try to cut through the cardboard all at once.
• Try to cut just through one layer, without cutting other layers.
• Try to cut through just two layers, without cutting the third layer.
• Note how easily a sharp blade cuts the cardboard in just a few strokes.
• Think about which side of the cut is the good side and which side will be scrap. You will put the straight edge over the good side so that if your knife slips, it will cut the side that will be scrapped.

Make the cube

• When you are done with the steps in this section, you should have a 6 pieces of cardboard. The squares that will be the 4 sides of the cube should have 1/8″ cutouts on 3 edges. The top and the bottom should be 2″ squares with no cutouts

• Assemble the sides so that you have shelf for the top and bottom faces and so the raw edges are all covered.
• Test the assembly of your cube.
• Make the top and bottom faces
2. On a fresh edge of your sheet of cardboard, cut a 2″ square of cardboard for the top of your perfect cube.
3. Repeat for the bottom face.
• Remove the first two layers from each of the three edges. Make a few light passes with the knife, until only the third layer is uncut.
1. Do not cut all the way through the three layers of cardboard. You need to leave the paper so that it will cover the raw edge of the face that joins it.
2. Remove the two layers of cardboard from the three edges.
• From each chosen edge measure in 1/8″ and lightly mark using the Exacto blade.
• Think about which side of the cardboard you want to face out.
• Note: Use only the metal straight edge when cutting the cardboard with the Exacto knife. Do not use the triangle as a straight edge: the sharp blade will ruin the edge of the triangle (unless you are using a metal triangle).
1. From this established corner, cut a 2″ square
3. Make sure to mark in two spots for each cut, to ensure that you make an accurate cut. Use the Exacto blade to make the mark since it is more accurate than a pencil
4. Make three ledges on this square in order to make a clean joint at the edge of the cube.
• Note: this step is necessary because the edges of a sheet of cardboard are often crushed. You want clean, straight edges.
• Use the triangle to check that you have a right angle.
• Construct each of the four sides
2. Create a clean, straight cut close to one of the edges.
3. Make another clean, straight cut perpendicular to the first cut and close to the adjacent edge.
4. Make sure that the corner made by these two cuts is perpendicular.
• Repeat these steps three more times to make four sides to the cube.
• Change the blade each time you start a new side.
1. Do a test assembly without glue to be sure you know how your cube goes together.
2. Get a scrap piece of cardboard (aka a glue pad) and put a blob of glue on it.
3. Use a small stick or your finger to transfer the glue from the pad to your part.
4. Put a thin film of glue on the paper part of the joint. (You don’t want to put it on the corrugated part – it will blob and not stick well.) Be sure you have just a thin film of glue and be sure that the glue is only on the joint, not running all over your cube.
5. Hold the joint together for about 10 seconds before proceeding to the next joint.
6. Most people find it easiest to assemble the sides around the bottom and to add the top as the last step.
