Exercise 1: 3D CAD and print

Hanging planter for the Hunt A5 grid

Thursday March 28: CAD files due on Canvas
Tuesday April 2: 3D printed plants due in class

Design a plant holder that will hang on the grid in the classroom. It must:

  • Hold at least 60 in^3 of dirt
  • Hang on the grid in the classroom. This probably means a flat back and at least one 1/2″ hole for an S hook, but other solutions are acceptable.
  • Allow for drainage; that is, keep the roots from sitting in saturated soil and getting root rot.
  • Minimize the amount of water that ends up on the floor

Upload the CAD model to Canvas, then print on the Stratasys, NVBot or Ultimaker printer in Hunt A5B.

Notes:

1) The Stratasys is the preferred print platform. Its print volume is 4.75” x 4.75” x 4.75”

2) For those of you new to CAD, a simple box with a hole in the bottom for drainage and a hole on the side for an S hook is acceptable. For those of you with knowledge of CAD, I’m hoping to get some interesting shapes with some interesting solutions to the drainage problem.
