Interaction?\u00a0 What if the car won\u2019t let me turn, start, or stop?\u00a0 How can I disable safety features?<\/p>\n<p>Flight assistance software in commercial aircraft.\u00a0 Is autopilot interactive?<\/p>\n<p>Flight assistance for military aircraft: self-guiding drones, incoming missile warnings for helicopter pilots.\u00a0 Interaction or reaction?<\/p>\n<h2>Near-future Interaction<\/h2>\n<p>the focus of this class &#8211; we\u2019re prototyping for five years out<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>interacting with intelligent systems that we don\u2019t completely understand and that can make decisions against our will or with results we don\u2019t appreciate<\/li>\n<li>car that thinks you\u2019re too intoxicated, sleepy, or incompetent to drive, so it refuses to move<\/li>\n<li>home automation system that won\u2019t open the doors and let you leave because the particulate count in the air is hazardous and you\u2019re not wearing a mask<\/li>\n<li>police equipment that won\u2019t let you fire at unarmed civilians \u2014 pistol trapped in a holster, safety wont go off.<\/li>\n<li>fire engines that won\u2019t engage fires that cannot be contained<\/li>\n<li>entertainment systems that can filter content as part of mental-health<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We\u2019re giving \u201cagency\u201d to interactive devices: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agency_(philosophy)\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agency_(philosophy)<\/a> at least at the input level:\u00a0 &#8220;OK GOOGLE&#8221;, &#8220;Hey, Siri&#8221;.\u00a0 This means that the device is listening (recording?) all the time.\u00a0 Do your pets have agency?<\/p>\n<p>Anton Yelchin was <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2016\/06\/20\/autos\/jeep-recall-anton-yelchin\/index.html\">killed by his car<\/a>, possibly by bad interface design.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNear-future\u201d is a popular base of pop-culture: MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) is always set a few years from now <em>Blade Runner<\/em> (1982) was set in 2019, 37 years in the future.\u00a0 <em>Blade Runner 2049<\/em> (2017)\u00a0 is 32 years in the future of <em>Blade Runner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>practical effects are used as input devices to imagined systems of the future<\/p>\n<p>Adam Savage gets a no-spoilers tour of the Blade Runner 2049 prop shop: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/1fAk0CObPE4\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/1fAk0CObPE4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is not new, in the past we talked about the future and technology<em>. \u00a0<\/em> <em>Design for Dreaming<\/em>, released in 1956, is all about the future.\u00a0 It\u2019s also all about the level of sexism in the 1950s: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/1gKl-mwMyck\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/1gKl-mwMyck<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Good drama is about storytelling \u2014 what if interactive devices are characters in the story?\u00a0 Are we giving them agency by making them characters and not props?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>2001 A Space Odyssy<\/em> (1968) \u2014 HAL 9000, the ship\u2019s computer, decides it does not want to follow the plan laid out by humans<\/li>\n<li><em>Colossus: The Forbin Project<\/em> (1970) \u2014 our super computer meets the Soviet supercomputer and they plan our future<\/li>\n<li><em>Alien<\/em> (1979) \u2014 MOTHER, a semi-intelligent computer that controls spacecraft while humans are in cryosleep.<\/li>\n<li><em>War Games<\/em> (1983) &#8212; A computer controls all of America\u2019s nuclear weapons. Would you like to play a game?\u00a0 the only way to win is to not play the game.<\/li>\n<li>ST:TNG\u2019s Data \u2014 a walking mobile phone with AI smarter than any human?<\/li>\n<li><em>Terminator <\/em>(1984) \u2014 is a robot killing machine from 2029.\u00a0 Are the sequels \u2014 where T-800 has agency \u2014 good examples?<\/li>\n<li><em>Farscape<\/em> (1999-2003) \u2014 Moya, a Leviathan class creature, is a semi-intelligent spacecraft used by the main characters. She can refuse orders or do things because of her own desire against the will of her passengers.\u00a0 However, the Pilot is physically integrated with Moya at the physical level and can communicate directly with humans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Assignment 1, due at 11:59 the day before class, so these are due Monday, 24 Jan<\/h3>\n<p>1) Watch the entire &#8220;Design for Dreaming&#8221; film and make a few notes on the differences of it looking forward in time and contemporary entertainment like Blade Runner 2049 or the MCU.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll talk about this a bit in class.<\/p>\n<p>2) This is a\u00a0 pen-and-paper assignment to go over posting to the class blog and what a good submission looks like.\u00a0 If you want to make something with hardware, that\u2019s fine, but it\u2019s not required.\u00a0 Science fiction is ok, fantasy is not. ever.
