Non-mechanical controls, like touch-screen buttons, are easier to change into other controls but don\u2019t offer the same kind of haptic feedback, making them impossible to identify without looking at them and creating questions about whether they\u2019ve been actuated. Design interfaces with an appropriate combination that best fits the various uses and characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>Types of kinetic output<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>vibration<\/li>\n<li>thumps, pokes<\/li>\n<li>can we use temperature? something like peltier boards?<\/li>\n<li>symbols: Braille, history of Braille and printed shapes of letters for the blind in early books<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LMfQNkRR9N0\">Braille readers today<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Inputs for kinetic<\/h3>\n<p>One of the problems with kinetic inputs is errors\/noise in the data.<\/p>\n<p>One tool is basic stats, looking at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Standard_deviation\">standard deviation<\/a> helps us filter data.\u00a0 If you have a temperature sensor for your office that occasionally returns temps below freezing or above boiling, what do you do with that data?<\/p>\n<p>Another tool is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arduino.cc\/en\/Tutorial\/Smoothing\">smoothing and filtering<\/a> incoming data<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re talking about data over time, that gets in to the idea of languages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>signal encodings like Morse code.\u00a0 People have &#8220;accents&#8221; in how they generate Morse code by hand, WWI and WWII radio monitors learned who they were listening to.\u00a0 &#8220;That&#8217;s Hans, he always radios from western German between midnight and 4 am.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>pattern recognition: what does walk feel like?\u00a0 Run?\u00a0 What do crying and \u00a0 laughing sound like relative to speech?<\/li>\n<li>earthquake pattern recognition<\/li>\n<li>meaning generated by content that changes over time, poetry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Haptic\/touch vs. objects moving in space<\/h3>\n<p>How is touching a person different than moving an object?<\/p>\n<p>Person presses a button vs. wind from a heating vent spinning a fan sensor?<\/p>\n<p>Touch can be wrapped in a robotic device to convey emotion: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paro_(robot)\">Paro (wiki)<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oJq5PQZHU-I\">trade show demo.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Mini exercise for Looking Out<\/h3>\n<p>Find some examples of data over time to use in accessibility.\u00a0 No weather, no stock prices, will explain why on Thu.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Class recording check your email for the pass code.
