{"id":2459,"date":"2022-03-31T22:34:59","date_gmt":"2022-04-01T02:34:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.ideate.cmu.edu\/48-339\/s2022\/?p=2459"},"modified":"2022-03-31T22:34:59","modified_gmt":"2022-04-01T02:34:59","slug":"class-notes-31-mar-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/courses.ideate.cmu.edu\/48-339\/s2022\/?p=2459","title":{"rendered":"Class Notes, 31 Mar 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Start Visual<\/h2>\n<h3>Visual feedback<\/h3>\n<p>The less types and amount of visual feedback you give the better<\/p>\n<p>Ex: an analog clock needs hours and minutes, but does it need seconds?\u00a0 Microseconds?\u00a0 Centuries?\u00a0 Do digital clocks (ex: alarm clocks) display seconds?<\/p>\n<p>What do the clocks in my kitchen need to show me?\u00a0 Why are there so many clocks that aren&#8217;t in sync?\u00a0 I have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Zojirushi water boiler on the counter.<\/li>\n<li>Over the window\/sink, vintage analog clock stuck at 5:30<\/li>\n<li>Zojirushi rice maker<\/li>\n<li>iPad (we use for music in the kitchen)<\/li>\n<li>Microwave<\/li>\n<li>Stove<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the power goes out I have to reset each of them, there&#8217;s no external clock.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3qRGdWX\">This clock<\/a> costs $20 and sinks with the US <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atomic_clock\">atomic clock<\/a> radio broadcast.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eone-time.com\/collections\/all\">Another watch<\/a> with no second hand and no minute marks.\u00a0 Originally designed for the blind, but now a popular visual style.<\/p>\n<p>Did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/innovation\/how-susan-kare-designed-user-friendly-icons-for-first-macintosh-180973286\/\">Susan Kare<\/a> invent emoji?\u00a0 Her first icon designs for the Mac were done on a square grid as she knew needlepoint.\u00a0 She went on to do graphic design for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.behance.net\/gallery\/81139291\/General-Magic\">General Magic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Visual states<\/h3>\n<p>I look at these fundamental types of visual state:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>color<\/li>\n<li>motion<\/li>\n<li>intensity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The type of display is also important: led, a light, a screen, a moving object in 3 dimensions, a swinging\/flashing metronome.<\/p>\n<h3>Complex visual states<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>typeface<\/li>\n<li>language<\/li>\n<li>icons<\/li>\n<li>images<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Weekend assignment in two parts<\/h3>\n<p>First, please read chapters 3, 4, and 5 of <em>Make It So<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Second, look around your world and find some good and bad examples of visual display of information.\u00a0 Your home, your car, public transit, etc.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Example:\u00a0 I think my Eone Bradley watch changed how I think about time.\u00a0 I can only tell time to &#8220;about minutes&#8221;, it&#8217;s &#8220;about 4:55&#8221; or &#8220;about 4:15&#8221;.\u00a0 This has changed how I think about time being analog, not digital like on my phone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Start Visual Visual feedback The less types and amount of visual feedback you give the better Ex: an analog clock needs hours and minutes, but does it need seconds?\u00a0 Microseconds?\u00a0 Centuries?\u00a0 Do digital clocks (ex: alarm clocks) display seconds?
