A camera records and aerial view of people on a beach and projects it onto a sand box (small scale) for people to play with using their hands. The hands on the sandbox are then recorded and projected back onto the beach so that the people on the beach can interact with the huge hands. This was a commissioned work for Glow Santa Monica and takes place on Santa Monica Beach.

They host shows and events where the boat parks for some amount of time. Here the audience can interact and each individual can change the “space colony” that has already been created and morphed throughout this boat’s passage. Each change sticks past that individual night and changes the central story line that this sci-fi story is based on.

Sea Odyssey was a massive piece of street theatre created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. There are three characters in this story, each one a giant Puppet. Over the course of three days the uncle, girl and dog wander the streets of Liverpool looking for one another. The uncle is bringing news of the Titanic’s sinking to the girl who’s father was on the ship. The little girl giant was 30ft tall and the uncle was 50ft tall. Each giant is controlled with motors, lines and as many as 31 human puppeteers called Lilliputians. Following the giants around were many large props as well as live music. This was not the first project set in Liverpool to include giants walking around the city La PrincesseSea Odyssey was created by a french street theatre company called Royal de Luxe who have done other works of this type.

“Dismaland” organized by Banksy (2015) https://courses.ideate.cmu.edu/54-498/f2015/dismaland-organized-by-banksy-2015/ https://courses.ideate.cmu.edu/54-498/f2015/dismaland-organized-by-banksy-2015/#respond Wed, 02 Sep 2015 23:58:45 +0000 http://courses.ideate.cmu.edu/mediadesign/f15/54-498/?p=10116 This event went viral a few weeks ago, undoubtedly due to Banksy’s reputation. This event is a physical forum for artworks by over fifty artists, modeled after Walt Disney’s Disneyland that runs from August 21 to September 27 this year in Weston-super-Mare, England. The experience of park-goers is a satirical take on a theme park experience– in this mimicry, the park becomes theatrical. The people become participants and must experience the works as if they were rides. Although this project can be considered from a museum-esque because it showcases many different works of art, I think the fake-amusement-park contex is enough to separate it and make it a live piece. The entire park is a live work. Also, unlike museums, this park is not a permanent fixture with rotating galleries or exhibits.5760

“Dickens of a Christmas” by the city of Roanoke, Virginia (annual) https://courses.ideate.cmu.edu/54-498/f2015/dickens-of-a-christmas-by-the-city-of-roanoke-virginia/ https://courses.ideate.cmu.edu/54-498/f2015/dickens-of-a-christmas-by-the-city-of-roanoke-virginia/#respond Wed, 02 Sep 2015 23:29:04 +0000 http://courses.ideate.cmu.edu/mediadesign/f15/54-498/?p=10112 Dickens of a Christmas is a huge festival in my hometown city of Roanoke, Virginia. Over the course of several weekends in December, members of the community participate in various events such as a tree lighting ceremony, horse pulled carriage rides, a Christmas parade, and vendors in costume. Most notably however, is the acting out of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. On every street corner, a group of actors acts out a single scene from the book. In the downtime between enactments, actors walk around, still in character and interact with the community. Usually there are tours every half hour so as to show the play in its entirety, but one can also wander freely and observe the scenes out of order. This is an extraordinary event in my city which allows the viewer so much freedom to experience the book, and also to feel immersed in the scene— being surrounded by actors in 1800’s clothing and speaking in British accents.
