Project 2 – The different modality of signals

Prompt:

Before we begin, download the Arduino software

You will be making a performative modular device, driving by *Arduino Nano, which will have the following components:

An LED light

A button

A potentiometer

A motor

A photoresistor

  • Some patches that can get you started in translating the incoming signals into sound, and beyond

You will have a set of these each, so that means multiple sets of these items within your group.

Use your collective resources and device a work, of between 10-12 minutes, that can be performed in class next week (03/25).

Things you might want to consider to explore, but not limited to:

  • What can be turned into a musical/sound instrument? How?
  • What effects do the potential visual elements have on the perception of the performance?
  • How does the design of the “instrument” effects the performance outcome? (For example, where do you place the knobs and therefore how does the way your hands move effects how the performance looks, feels, sounds, or perceived?)

You may want to synthesize the collective proposals you and your groupmates wrote for Writing Assignment II as the overall framework for this project, Alternatively, you can choose to start afresh – build a system first then decide what you want to do with it. Chance and indeterminacy procedures are still very much alive in current-day Experimentalism in the arts!

Submission procedure:

  • A short write-up of the piece, in no longer than 300 words, include information on:

1) who was responsible for what aspect(s) of the project (it’s ok if more than one person were responsible for one aspect, or vice versa)

2) What the piece aims to portray/achieve/present?

3) What were the components of your performance instrument(s)?

4) Any schematic diagrams (eg. Fritzing diagrams) of your system that is different from the one used as the starting point in class

5) A short video documentation demonstrating of how the instrument works

6) Perform the work in class on 03/25

please label your folder with the names of the members of your group.
