{"id":4012,"date":"2020-08-31T11:21:40","date_gmt":"2020-08-31T15:21:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.ideate.cmu.edu\/60-212\/f2020\/?page_id=4012"},"modified":"2020-08-31T11:21:40","modified_gmt":"2020-08-31T15:21:40","slug":"looking-outwards","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/courses.ideate.cmu.edu\/60-212\/f2020\/deliverables\/looking-outwards\/","title":{"rendered":"Looking Outwards"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What is a &#8220;Looking Outwards&#8221; report?<\/h2>\n<p>This semester, you will periodically be asked to &#8220;look outwards&#8221; &#8212; to browse various blogs and feeds (see below) or other resources in order to deepen your knowledge of the field, and familiarize yourself with the current state of the art. You will then be expected to report on your findings, as described below &#8212; hopefully, with a critical perspective. Some weeks, the &#8220;Looking Outwards&#8221; deliverables may be thematically oriented. There is no restriction on the sources of information you may use for a &#8220;Looking Outwards&#8221; report.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A &#8220;Looking-Outwards&#8221; report is a\u00a0blog post reporting on a new media project that interests you.\u00a0<\/strong>Your job is to browse blogs and other sources, and then report on artworks or other\u00a0projects that\u00a0<em>you haven&#8217;t seen before<\/em>. (For this course, it may be most appropriate to select projects that are made by individuals or small teams, rather than large companies, but that&#8217;s not a strong requirement). Blogging about a project of which you&#8217;re already aware defeats the point of the assignment, which is to deepen your familiarity with the fields of new media arts and creative technology.<\/p>\n<p>Try to find things that you aspire to make yourself. If you&#8217;re not\u00a0finding projects that interest you, ask your professor or teaching assistant for advice. You probably just need to find the right search terms.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>How to do a\u00a0<em>Looking Outwards<\/em>\u00a0report<\/h2>\n<p>In a blog post,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>write<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0a paragraph (~150 words) about the\u00a0project that interested you, and<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>embed<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0relevant images and\/or video documentation of the\u00a0project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the paragraph you write, you should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Explain the project in a sentence or two (what it is, how it operates, etc.);<\/li>\n<li>Explain what\u00a0<em>inspires<\/em>\u00a0you about the project (i.e. what you find interesting or admirable);<\/li>\n<li><em>Critique<\/em>\u00a0the project: describe how it might\u00a0have been more effective; discuss some of the intriguing\u00a0possibilities that it suggests, or opportunities that it missed; explain what you think the creator(s)\u00a0got right, and\u00a0<em>how<\/em>\u00a0they got it right.<\/li>\n<li><em>Research<\/em>\u00a0the project&#8217;s chain of influences. Dig up the &#8216;deep background&#8217;, and compare the project with related work or prior art, if appropriate. What sources inspired the creator this project? What was &#8220;their&#8221; Looking Outwards?<\/li>\n<li>Please be sure to label your blog post with our WordPress &#8220;category&#8221;,\u00a0<em>LookingOutwards<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Title your blog post(s) consistently, with the title\u00a0<em>YourName-LookingOutwards-1<\/em>, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Part of the purpose of your Looking Outwards documentation is to increase the documentation, in the world, of noteworthy but vulnerable media artifacts.\u00a0<em>Therefore<\/em>, when including video documentation of projects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Embedding a YouTube or Vimeo video is great, but you should also<\/li>\n<li>Prepare and upload an\u00a0<strong>animated GIF<\/strong>\u00a0to this WordPress. Tips for making animated GIFs can be found in the &#8220;Resources&#8221; section of this WordPress site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Evaluation of your\u00a0<em>Looking Outwards<\/em>\u00a0Reports<\/h2>\n<p>Each\u00a0<em>Looking Outwards<\/em>\u00a0report can receive one of two marks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>0 points.<\/strong>\u00a0You did not do the report.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1 point.<\/strong>\u00a0You did the report.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Learning Outcomes of\u00a0<em>Looking Outwards<\/em>\u00a0Reports<\/h2>\n<p>After completing the sequence of\u00a0<em>Looking Outwards<\/em>\u00a0reports, you will be able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Demonstrate familiarity with historic and\/or contemporary\u00a0new-media projects relevant to that student&#8217;s specific research interests;<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate familiarity with new-media projects that exemplify cultural practices that use widely-used\u00a0arts-engineering toolkits and\/or with specific technologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Where to research\u00a0<em>Looking Outwards<\/em>\u00a0subjects<\/h2>\n<p>In normal times, you would be encouraged to do research at <a href=\"http:\/\/search.library.cmu.edu\/\">our university&#8217;s library<\/a>. It has books, films and other media that are not online.\u00a0 Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, it is likely that you will conduct this research online. Below\u00a0is a list of some prominent online feeds that present current work in new media art. This list can be used as a starting point for preparing your regular <em>Looking Outwards<\/em>\u00a0reports.
