Looking Outwards #04: Machine Learning (<em>Due 11\/9<\/em>)<\/h3>\n<p>Spend about 30 minutes browsing the following online showcases of projects that make use of machine learning and &#8216;AI&#8217; techniques. More than 500 projects are indexed across these sites.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mlart.co\/\">MLArt.co Gallery<\/a> (a collection of Machine Learning experiments curated by Emil Wallner).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aiartonline.com\/\">AI Art Gallery<\/a> (online exhibition of the 2019 NeurIPS Workshop on Machine Learning for Creativity and Design). <em>Note<\/em>: this site also hosts the exhibitions for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aiartonline.com\/category\/community\/\">2018<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aiartonline.com\/category\/art-2017\/\">2017<\/a> conferences.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/experiments.withgoogle.com\/collection\/ai\">Chrome Experiments: AI Collection<\/a> (a showcase of experiments, commissioned by Google, that explore machine learning through pictures, drawings, language, and music)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Now<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>After considering several dozen projects, select one to feature in a <em>Looking Outwards<\/em> blog post. <em>Restrictions:<\/em> You may not select a project by your professor, nor by Helena Sarin (who will be visiting our class on Monday 11\/9).<\/li>\n<li>As usual, include an image of the selected project; a link to information about it, and 100-150 words describing the project and why you found it interesting.<\/li>\n<li>Please title this blog post <em>nickname-LookingOutwards04<\/em>, and categorize the project <em>LookingOutwards-04.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>2. Machine Learning Tinkering (<em>Ungraded; Due 11\/9<\/em>)<\/h3>\n<p>This assignment has four parts, the purpose of which is to d\u0336i\u0336s\u0336t\u0336r\u0336a\u0336c\u0336t\u0336 immerse you in creatively using some machine-learning systems. Experiment with <strong>edges2cats <\/strong>and some of the other interactive demonstrations (such as <strong>facades, edges2shoes,<\/strong> etc.). You are asked to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Create<\/strong> at least 3 different designs. Using ArtBreeder&#8217;s &#8220;<em>General<\/em>&#8221; model, develop at least two images.<\/li>\n<li>Using your choice of the <em>Portraits<\/em>, <em>Album Covers<\/em>, <em>Landscapes<\/em>, or <em>Anime Portraits<\/em> models, create at least one additional design.<\/li>\n<li>Embed your results in a blog post entitled <em>nickname-ArtBreeder <\/em>and Categorized, <em>08-ArtBreeder<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>In your blog post, write a reflective sentence or two about your experience using this tool.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Part 2C: <em>Talk to Transformer (GPT-2)<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>Use the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/app.inferkit.com\/demo\">TalkToTransformer<\/a>&#8221; (InferKit) tool by Adam King, built using Open AI&#8217;s GPT-2 language model, to generate some samples of text which interest you.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>TalkToTransformer:<\/strong> Generate two samples of text with this tool. (Use the &#8220;Custom Prompt&#8221; setting from the pulldown menu.)<\/li>\n<li>Embed the text experiments in a blog post. <strong>Use boldface<\/strong>\u00a0to indicate which words were provided by you as inputs to the system.<\/li>\n<li>Title your blog post <em>nickname-GPT2<\/em>, and categorize your blog post with the WordPress category, <em>08-GPT2<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>In your blog post, write a reflective sentence or two about your experience using this tool.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Part 2D: <em>Teachable Machine<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>Google&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/teachablemachine.withgoogle.com\/\">Teachable Machine<\/a><\/strong> tool allows you to train a (neural-network-based) image recognition system, in the browser, without code.
