Group 1: Roly, Sydney, Chae Rin, Jackson, Selina

Originally inspired by a Christmas tree, we as a group focused on the characters mainly through their interactions and the randomized movements generated by their interactions and the choices of the puppeteers.

For the movement of the character, we started with a turnable gear. We added the left and right movement to create a more intriguing interaction between the two characters we created. In terms of gears used, the character can rotate and translate in a parallel manner. To create more characteristics, we added eyes to the characters and used craft stems to create more fluid movement. We wanted to focus on the natural movements on the character caused by the gear movements.

Furthermore, we utilized the parallel translation to increase interaction between the characters. When the characters interacted, we aimed for the pom pom and craft stems to create randomized behaviors and choreography that depended on the frequency of the puppeteer’s movements.

We also paid attention to the colors and originally wanted the bell sounds to be present in the scene. But the background noise was too loud, so we recorded another soundtrack to go over the video. The color we mainly utilized filtered lighting and fabric to create a more warm color choice to ultimately give a slight bit of environment for the two characters. This technique was also utilized to decrease distractions from the scene.

We feel that although we focused on features in the character that were more relatable (like having eyes), we wanted the characters to also feel unfamiliar by utilizing more uncommon shapes and textures.
