You are an expert in some\u00a0 specialization (such as botany, zoology, geology, psychology, xenoarchaeology, exogastronomy, etc.). Your ship lands; you set up your devices; and you begin to investigate the people, places, or things which are the subject of your specialization. Your job is to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>build a data-collection &#8220;machine&#8221; (i.e. system, apparatus, or workflow) which<\/strong><em>, through capture,<\/em>\u00a0allows you to answer a question about your specific subject. Then,<\/li>\n<li><strong>create a typology of media objects<\/strong>\u00a0which presents your findings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Acceptable sorts of media objects include, <em>but are not limited to<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a collection of static images, 3D models, 3D prints, 2D renderings, data visualizations, etc., or<\/li>\n<li>a collection of time-based videos, animations, animated GIFs, audio recordings, etc., or<\/li>\n<li>a real-time software executable\/game, which presents your collection in some way, possibly with the aid of a database, and which optionally supports interactions such as zooming, sorting, filtering, querying, etc.<\/li>\n<li>a book, a video, a collage, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Your objective in this assignment is to make a machine (i.e. system, apparatus, or workflow) which automates capturing things, for the purposes of producing a typology.<\/strong> You are asked to use your typology machine to document at least 3 items\u2014though preferably many more. Resources for your consideration include this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.photopedagogy.com\/typologies.html\">article on typologies<\/a>, and course lectures on <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/golanlevin\/ExperimentalCapture\/blob\/master\/docs\/typologies.md\">typologies<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/golanlevin\/ExperimentalCapture\/blob\/master\/docs\/portraits_1_series.md\">portrait series<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/golanlevin\/ExperimentalCapture\/blob\/master\/docs\/portraits_2_candid_machinery.md\">candid capture systems<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/golanlevin\/ExperimentalCapture\/blob\/master\/docs\/portraits_3_indirect_portrait.md\">proxy portraiture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"deliverables\"><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Deliverables<\/h3>\n<h5>Proposal (due Thursday, September 15th)<\/h5>\n<p>A\u00a0<em>proposal<\/em> for this project is due Thursday, September 15th at the beginning of class. This should take the form of a blog post, containing a clear description of your proposed project, explanatory illustrations, and links to references or inspirations. Please categorize your post with the WordPress Category, <strong><em>TypologyMachineProposal<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h5>Project (due Thursday, September 29)<\/h5>\n<p>Please be sure to complete all of the requirements below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Create<\/strong>\u00a0a blog post on this WordPress site, whereat you will document your project.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Categorize<\/strong>\u00a0your blog post with the WordPress category,\u00a0<strong><em>TypologyMachine<\/em><\/strong>. This helps make it easy to find your project later.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Describe<\/strong>\u00a0your project, in a single, clear, compelling sentence, at the top of your blog post. This sentence should explain what the project\u00a0<strong><em>is<\/em><\/strong>, and give a suggestion about why someone may find it interesting. (What was your research question?)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Write<\/strong>\u00a0approximately 300 words, in your blog post, discussing your process and results. Be sure to address the questions below.\n<ul>\n<li><em>What was your research question or hypothesis?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>What were your inspirations?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How did you develop your project? Describe your machine or workflow in detail, including diagrams if necessary. What was more complex than you thought? What was easier?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>In what ways is your presentation (and the process by which you made it) specific to your subject? Why did you choose those tools\/processes for this subject?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Evaluate your project. In what ways did you succeed, or fail? What opportunities remain?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Embed<\/strong>\u00a0images of your project in the blog post. This might include screenshots, renderings, etc. Include a scan or photo of any relevant notebook sketches, if possible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Embed<\/strong>\u00a0a quantity of your media objects (images, videos, GIFs) in the blog post.<\/li>\n<li>If your project is an interactive software system,\u00a0<strong>record<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>embed<\/strong>\u00a0a screengrabbed video demonstrating its use, ideally with narration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"learning-objectives\"><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Learning Objectives<\/h3>\n<p><em>Upon conclusion of this assignment, students will be able to:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Recognize<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>discuss<\/strong>\u00a0the use of\u00a0<em>typologies<\/em>\u00a0(in photography and related media), as well as small multiples (in information visualization), and \u201cminimum inventory, maximum diversity\u201d systems (in science and the arts) in presenting collections of comparable units<\/li>\n<li><strong>Demonstrate<\/strong>\u00a0a practical understanding of the use of\u00a0<em>automation<\/em>\u00a0in data collection \u2014 whether by computational, algorithmic, mechanical, manual, or conceptual means<\/li>\n<li><b>Design\u00a0<\/b>and<b>\u00a0construct<\/b>\u00a0a novel or non-traditional\u00a0<em>capture technique<\/em>, and demonstrate an understanding of its application to the production of a poetic, elucidative, and\/or revelatory work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Project 1: Typology Machine Overview Deliverables Learning Objectives Overview This project is due Thursday, September 29 at the beginning of class.
