You may use the Final Project as an opportunity to revisit, reinvent, or revise a previous project from the semester \u2014 or you may pursue a new line of inquiry altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, we anticipate that you will, using expanded capture techniques, acquire an impression of something in the world, and develop a presentation from this impression which reveals something hidden or immaterial about that thing.<\/p>\n<p>One new dimension of the Final Project we wish you to consider is how your project is framed, contextualized, or platformed. We ask you to answer the question: Where will, does or would your project live? Frame your work. If it is not ready for the public, then answer in the speculative.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Final Project Timeline<\/h3>\n<p>Your Final Project is due in the following stages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Thursday, 10 November:<\/strong> In-class \u201cround-robin\u201d pod brainstorming<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tuesday, 22 November:<\/strong> Written proposals due (in the blog)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tuesday, 6 December:<\/strong> Project is due, in-class critique (with guests).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thursday, 15 December, Noon:<\/strong> Any remaining documentation is due (in the blog).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Project Documentation Deliverables<\/h3>\n<p>As usual, you are asked to document your project in a blog post. You will use this documentation to present your project from the lectern in an in-class critique on 12\/6. Amendments to this documentation will be accepted until noon on 12\/15.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Create<\/strong>\u00a0a blog post, titled\u00a0<em>nickname-final<\/em>\u00a0and categorized\u00a0<em>FinalProject<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>At the top of your blog post,\u00a0<strong>place<\/strong> the title of your project, a one-sentence description, and <strong>embed<\/strong> an animated GIF or &#8216;hero&#8217; image.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Write<\/strong>\u00a0about 200 words\u00a0on the following:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What\u00a0<em>IS<\/em>\u00a0your project?<\/strong> It may be helpful to discuss the following things separately: the\u00a0<em>subject<\/em>\u00a0you wanted to capture; the\u00a0<em>system<\/em> you created to capture it; the nature of the\u00a0<em>media object<\/em> you created in order to present the results of your capture process; and the <em>platform<\/em> you selected to frame it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Why is your project interesting?<\/strong> Depending on your project, it may be helpful to discuss: Why were you interested in capturing your particular subject? In what way is your capture system or media object novel? What motivated or inspired you to conduct this investigation? Note that you may need to educate your reader somewhat about your subject, tools, or techniques.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Frame your work.<\/strong> We ask you to answer the question: Where will, does or would your project <em>live<\/em>?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Historicize your work.<\/strong>\u00a0Include an image of prior or related\u00a0work by others. Briefly discuss how your work continues (whether technically, or in terms of content) where previous work leaves off.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Evaluate your work.<\/strong>\u00a0Where did you succeed, what could be better, what opportunities remain?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Embed<\/strong> your media object. This is the thing itself, in the best quality you can. If your media object cannot be embedded in a web page (e.g. if it\u2019s an executable application, or a 3D-printed object), please make an embeddable media object to document it, such as a screen-grabbed video recording, still image, or an animated GIF.<\/li>\n<li>After embedding the media object,\u00a0<strong>narrate the process<\/strong>\u00a0of creating your project. Here\u2019s the place for your \u201cmaking-of\u201d section. Include the following supporting materials:\n<ul>\n<li>Write\u00a0<strong>text<\/strong>\u00a0about how you made\/captured the thing<\/li>\n<li>Include process\u00a0<strong>images<\/strong>: sketches from your notebook, photos of you working on your project, screenshots at intermediate stages, alternate versions of your final object, dead ends you pursued.<\/li>\n<li>Please include redundant documentation in the form of\u00a0<strong>animated GIFs<\/strong>, which are very durable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Relationship Between Final Project and the Class Exhibition<\/h3>\n<p>On Thursday, December 8th at 4:30pm we will host an ExCap Class Exhibition in the STUDIO. We frame your participation in the ExCap Class Exhibition an an <em>offering<\/em> to our community. Participating in the Class Exhibition is warmly invited and strongly encouraged \u2014 but in terms of your satisfactory completion of the class through a Final Project, you are only <em>required<\/em> to participate in the in-class critique on 12\/6, and submit documentation of your final project before noon on December 15th.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that the project you choose to offer in the Class Exhibition, if any, may be different than your Final Project. The Exhibition is a great opportunity to present interactive projects, video documentation, etc., but the Exhibition may not be the ideal presentation format for all research.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the Final Project?
