This information is reproduced here.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Course Numbers<\/h3>\n<p><em>Experimental Capture<\/em> is a 12-unit IDeATe course. There are four sections that meet simultaneously:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>60-461 (Undergraduate section in the School of Art)<\/li>\n<li>54-461 (Undergraduate section in the School of Drama)<\/li>\n<li>60-761 (Graduate section in the School of Art)<\/li>\n<li>54-661 (Graduate section in the School of Drama)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Required Course Materials<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Laptop.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Students should have access to a personal laptop. Recent, well-updated installations of Mac OSX, Windows and Linux are all acceptable operating systems. However, although nearly all of the programming toolkits with which we work are free and cross-platform, it is possible that example projects may only be provided for Mac OSX. The programming environments used for some example projects may include Unity (C#), Processing (Java), Python, OpenFrameworks (C++), and p5.js (JavaScript).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Camera.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In general, students must have access to a camera to document their work. A smartphone with a camera is acceptable.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Sketchbook<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is wise to plan your projects on paper. You are therefore required to maintain a paper sketchbook for this course.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Communication Tools<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This course uses the following software systems to share information:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Email and Discord<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> The professors will send messages once or twice a week. Messages will be sent via email and Discord. Please read them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/courses.ideate.cmu.edu\/60-461\/f2022\/\"><strong>This WordPress website<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>,<\/strong> through which students publish Projects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/golanlevin\/ExperimentalCapture\">A GitHub repository<\/a>,<\/strong> containing code and other resources.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/courses.ideate.cmu.edu\/60-461\/f2022\/syllabus\/course-calendar\/\">A Google Calendar<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Key Topics<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the key subject topics that this course will cover?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The course introduces a wide range of experimental and expanded reality capture techniques including photogrammetry, volumetric video, motion capture, multispectral imaging, machine vision, and more.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Prerequisite Knowledge<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What prior knowledge must students have in order to be successful in this course?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students are expected to have at least basic familiarity with software workflows for editing and distributing video, audio, and images.<\/li>\n<li>Although coding skills are not required, they can be helpful; it is recommended that students already be comfortable with the basics of programming, as taught in courses like 15-104, 15-110, 15-112, or an equivalent. Students who are inexperienced in coding should be prepared to fake it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Course Relevance<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is this course relevant to the targeted student populations?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This course is relevant to students who are interested in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exploring the affordances of unfamiliar, forgotten, and nascent image capture technologies in revealing unseen or alternative realities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exploring the use of computation in expanding our expressive vocabulary for representations of people, objects, environments, and events<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Questioning the practical and epistemological assumptions that underpin the project of capturing representations of reality with devices<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Assessment Structure<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will students be assessed in this course: assignments, exams, final, presentation, project, etc.?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are three main assignments due at approximately monthly intervals, including a Capstone (final) project with a proposal, check-in, and public exhibition phase.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Learning Resources<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What resources will be available for students: web pages, learning applications, texts, case studies, etc.?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Available resources include specialized hardware, GitHub repositories, a course web site, and a Discord server.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Extra Time Commitments<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are there extra time commitments required outside of the regularly scheduled course meeting times?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No. However, students may wish to attend the optional Wednesday evening work sessions which are sometimes held in the STUDIO.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Accommodations<\/h3>\n<p>If you have a disability and have an accommodation\u2019s letter from the Disability Resources office, we encourage you to discuss your accommodations and needs with us as early in the semester as possible.
