{"id":4322,"date":"2021-09-30T11:36:29","date_gmt":"2021-09-30T15:36:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.ideate.cmu.edu\/62-150\/f2021a\/?page_id=4322"},"modified":"2021-09-30T14:07:40","modified_gmt":"2021-09-30T18:07:40","slug":"textile-talk","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/courses.ideate.cmu.edu\/62-150\/f2021a\/assignments\/textile-talk\/","title":{"rendered":"Textile Talk"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul><li><strong><em>Selected Topics Submitted:<\/em><\/strong> Tues., 10\/5<\/li><li><em style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><strong><em>Bibliography, outline and scanned image due (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1lbw-TidDG3tFLW76yjyoKbXZc4RKw84A?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\">upload here<\/a>):<\/em><\/strong><\/em> Tues. 10\/19<\/li><li><em><strong><em>Textile Talks presentation due (<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1lbw-TidDG3tFLW76yjyoKbXZc4RKw84A?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">upload here<\/a>):<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em><\/em>Tues. 10\/26<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Textile Talks are designed to help our community learn about aspects of textile history, traditions and technical processes, as well as contemporary issues.&nbsp; The presentation allows each of you to investigate a topic that is of particular interest to you, sharing your findings with the class, while building your research and presentation skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look over the list of topics.&nbsp; Please choose one, or if you have another topic in mind that is not on the list, propose it to me.&nbsp; Make sure that your topic is not too broad \u2013 i.e. quilts (what a big genre!).&nbsp; Be specific \u2013 locate a particular culture or tradition (i.e. Amish quilts or Gee\u2019s Bend quilts).&nbsp; Research your topic, gather visual materials and share your findings with the class through an engaging presentation utilizing projected images and speaking. (Powerpoint or Google Slides are recommended, though you may propose an alternative presentation style.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Your presentation will be to the entire class.<\/li><li>You must submit an outline, bibliography and scanned image to <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1lbw-TidDG3tFLW76yjyoKbXZc4RKw84A?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this google drive<\/a> (due date above).<\/li><li>Your scanned image must be from a book found on the 4th Floor of the Hunt Library (and is a mini-assignment worth 2 points)<\/li><li>Your sources must be in MLA style and must include at least 3 non-internet sources (journal articles accessed via the library\u2019s online journal catalog are acceptable as non-internet sources).<ul><li>Overview of MLA style guidelines: <a href=\"http:\/\/honolulu.hawaii.edu\/legacylib\/mlahcc.html\">http:\/\/honolulu.hawaii.edu\/legacylib\/mlahcc.html<\/a><\/li><li>Resource about MLA style (in the left select links saying \u201cworks cited\u201d for info about bibliographies): <a href=\"http:\/\/owl.english.purdue.edu\/owl\/resource\/747\/01\/\">http:\/\/owl.english.purdue.edu\/owl\/resource\/747\/01\/<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The presentation may not exceed 10 minutes.\u00a0 Please limit the number of visuals to 18-20.<\/li><li>Do not project the text of your presentation &#8211; instead use images to support your talk.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Consider these questions in preparing your presentation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>When and where was this work made?&nbsp; Would a map be useful to help us understand?<\/li><li>What are the origins of the textile process? Why did it develop?&nbsp; How?<\/li><li>How was it made?&nbsp; What was it made from?<\/li><li>How did the makers learn their craft?&nbsp; What were their working conditions?<\/li><li>Where is\/was the work seen or how is\/was it used?<\/li><li>How did the work evolve?&nbsp;
