Acid Dyed Yarn

Acid Dye Samples:
Each group dyes 3 skeins of yarn (~50-60 grams each) and 100-120 grams of wool batting/roving per team. Skeins will be dyed as follows:
1 skein with assigned color (full immersion method)
1 skein with created color (using the microwave)
1 skein multi-colored or speckled (with colors of students’ choosing, using either microwave or low immersion).
Wool batting/roving will be split and dyed with assigned colors using immersion and microwave method. Students are encouraged to make simple proportional adjustments to the mixing ratios assigned to them as long as the adjustments are well documented. Students decide DOS for all colors. Great examples for how to adjust color recipes to get variations can be found on this blog.

Before wetting out your fiber, record the weight of the fiber and calculate your dye measurements per each color. All fiber must be wet out for 30 minutes with a drop of liquid soap. Follow instructions in Immersion Dyeing pdf (link below). Note: we will not scour the wool yarn and roving that we are dyeing. For future reference, the scouring process is outlined here. Scouring is the cleaning of fibers (protein and cellulose) from grease and sizing starches used in the weaving of textiles.
