{"id":49,"date":"2018-01-13T20:13:23","date_gmt":"2018-01-14T01:13:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.ideate.cmu.edu\/62-150\/s2023a\/?page_id=49"},"modified":"2023-08-24T11:20:47","modified_gmt":"2023-08-24T15:20:47","slug":"a4-sewing-lab-a31-dye-lab-rules","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/courses.ideate.cmu.edu\/62-150\/s2023a\/syllabus-2\/a4-sewing-lab-a31-dye-lab-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"A4 Sewing Lab, A31 Dye Lab Rules"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Soft Technologies Facilities Rules\u00a0 <\/strong><br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/courses.ideate.cmu.edu\/62-150\/s2023a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Studio-Rules-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">A4, A31 Room Rules, PDF<\/a><strong><br><\/strong>contact:<br><a href=\"mailto:orobinso@andrew.cmu.edu\">Olivia Robinson<\/a> (<a href=\"mailto:orobinso@andrew.cmu.edu\">orobinso@andrew.cmu.edu<\/a>) <br><a href=\"mailto:pinchuknatalya@gmail.com\">Natalya Pinchuk<\/a>(<a href=\"mailto:npinchuk@andrew.cmu.edu\">npinchuk@andrew.cmu.edu<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-bright-red-color\">A4 &#8211; Sewing Lab<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>General Rules<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Leave the lab cleaner than you found it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Return things to their correct location<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Food &amp; Drink<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>No wet, crumbly, messy food (no chips, sandwiches, soups, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No food at sewing machines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Covered drinks only<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get rid of wrappers and leftovers right away<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Be kind to surfaces, equipment, and others &#8211; or no food will be allowed<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Equipment<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Only use the embroidery machines, overlock machine\/serger, or industrial Juki if you have been trained to use them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Update yourself by watching the Singer video on how to use the new sewing machines <u><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/singer-sewing-demo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/bit.ly\/singer-sewing-demo<\/a><\/u><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sharps<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Broken needles and pins should be disposed of in the red sharps box (not the trash)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you see needles or pins laying around, return them to a magnetic pin cushion<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Irons<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Always turn off the iron when finished<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not leave irons plugged if you leave the room<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Material and Fabric Bins<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Bin labels:\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c<strong>For General Student Use<\/strong>\u201d &#8211; any students can use these materials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some boxes will have <strong>specific class names<\/strong> &#8211; these materials are only for students in that class and students not in that class should not go into that box<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201c<strong>Instructors Only<\/strong>\u201d &#8211; these boxes are only for instructors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Keep the fabric boxes well organized<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Go through the fabric boxes in an organized manner<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Neatly go through the fabric in the boxes and neatly return fabric to the boxes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take only what you need and neatly return what you don\u2019t use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ask for permission to use more than one yard of any of the fabrics<\/strong><br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Soft Sample Books<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Must remain in the studio. They do not have legs or wings, and therefore cannot travel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If they are taken down off the wall to be looked at &#8211; they must be returned when finished.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tools and Supplies<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>If we are running low on any materials, supplies, or small tools &#8211; please let us know by writing the item down on the clipboard next to the peg board. The lab assistant will check this board and replenish the low item<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Music<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Be thoughtful of others when playing music on the speakers in the labs or studios.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-bright-red-color\">A31 &#8211; the Dye Lab<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>General Rules<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Leave the dye lab cleaner than you found it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>No Food or Drink<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Return all tools to their designated homes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If a supply is running low, write it on the clipboard near the peg board<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>A31 must be kept clean and dry. Using A31 and A4 labs without supervision is a privilege. If the rooms are not kept clean, you won\u2019t be able to use them unsupervised. We want you to be able to have access to these facilities unsupervised &#8211; so make sure they are kept clean!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Moisture Control and Cleanliness:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Floor spills must be cleaned up immediately<\/strong> (use mop, sponges or towels)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The top of the large table on wheels must not get wet<\/strong>, ever<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use the A31 cart to transport pots of water and dye to and from sinks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dirty towels go into the laundry bin; simply wet towels that are not dirty should air dry on the drying lines and be put away<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wash pots and white bins thoroughly so there is NO dye residue left on them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dry large pots and white bins before returning them to their homes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Small pots and utensils can be left on the drying rack to air dry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Student Work Left to Dry:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Dried projects will be taken down from the drying lines and put in the dried project bin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pick up your project from that bin or from the drying line<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sinks:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The sinks that can be used for disposal of liquids are: <strong>janitor\u2019s closet<\/strong>, <strong>bathroom sinks<\/strong>, and <strong>future sink outside of the bathrooms<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do NOT use the sink in A5 for anything textile related<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Safety:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Wear a N95 mask when working with dye powders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not use any equipment in the room that you have not been trained to use<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do not leave any hot plate unattended or plugged in after you are finished<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Plug only ONE hot plate into one outlet at a time<\/strong>. The outlets are marked by colorful tape &#8211; only use one of the two pink, two blue, two green or two yellow outlets at a time. Also &#8211; do not plug in anything else into the same outlet color when using a hot plate. You will blow a circuit, the outlets in A31 will not work.
