In this project, we learned to scale a pattern and alter it in order to create a large inflatable. The biggest challenge was altering the current pattern in order to insure the air flow through all parts of the form. In addition, we learned that the legwork (drawing out the patterns, and planning out the order and method in which the parts are sewn together) was crucial and much more involved than the sewing itself.
Also, the original stuffed animal form and the inflatable version are two completely different sculptures. The small size and warmth of the felt material on the character it portrayed changed drastically when the material and scale were altered. Despite the changes and challenges of the larger, we are satisfied in its construction and ability to improvise the pattern.

Assignment 1: John Hewitt & Ema Furusho https://courses.ideate.cmu.edu/99-361/s2018a/assignment-1-john-hewitt-ema-furusho/ Tue, 06 Feb 2018 02:49:14 +0000 https://courses.ideate.cmu.edu/99-361/s2018a/?p=268 We first discussed and experimented with the material together. The plastic and tape were inclined to geometric and orderly forms and we experimented with constructing tubular, organic shapes. Along with playing with the idea of an organic inflatable there was also experimentation with found plastics and color schemes. Some of our structures struggled with being air-tight while others were more successful in retaining a clean and recognizable form.
If we were to continue experimenting with these forms, it would be interesting to make them at a larger scale and incorporating the plastic heat sealer to help with construction.
