For this assignment, I started with broad ideas of media arts to incorporate into inflatables as the medium. At first, it was challenging to find a way to narrow down what kind of inflatable shape I want to focus. However, it was easier when I simply thought about what I want to convey through this project to my classmates who are my audience.

Recently, I have been missing a lot of times when I had time to enjoy what I have and a few hidden joys that are hidden under the simple routinary life. Thus I decided to go for option 2 and create television inflatables that are in shape of old television which we used to have back in the days. The video editing process was enjoyable to me especially because of I recently learned how to use video editing programs. Also, to visualize two videos on two separate screens, I got help from Olivia to learn how to use madmapper. It was a great experience to learn various programs while working on a project I’m passionate. Creating a nostalgic mood through video was challenging and after the critique, I now have few more editing changes I wish to make.

Since it was my first time to combine video media and inflatable, I think it took some time to figure out how they interact and what synergy they create by existing as a whole. This project left me opened up the potential area to research more on media arts and artists who are involved in the field.

Chloe Kim_Doppleganger https://courses.ideate.cmu.edu/99-361/s2018a/chloe-kim_doppleganger/ Mon, 19 Mar 2018 17:48:02 +0000 https://courses.ideate.cmu.edu/99-361/s2018a/?p=566 Through this project, I learned how to pattern in scale and how to replicate the object I wish to resemble. I was excited to learn about how to create creative patterns in various design that does not actually exist in the real object. However, from next time I would choose a different kind of fabric for some of the patterns because although some people like the subtle design of my glass holder, I was little disappointed that I could not present my hard work and time spent on a complicated and curved pattern that was very hard to sew. Sewing such a small object like glass container to sew with a sewing machine was overly complex thus I also wish that I could have enlarged the pattern or chosen a bigger object. Overall, I enjoyed patterning for the object the most and it was a great learning experience for me to create a pattern for an object.

Assignment 3 – Chloe and Elijah https://courses.ideate.cmu.edu/99-361/s2018a/assignment-3-chloe-and-elijah/ Tue, 27 Feb 2018 05:01:10 +0000 https://courses.ideate.cmu.edu/99-361/s2018a/?p=444 For this assignment, we worked with the same partner to create inflatables based on the stuffed animal we created in last assignment. At first, it was challenging to find a way to display texture of our stuffed animal onto the inflatable because the inflatable material was smooth and did not have much texture to it. However, we added some of leftover threads on the ears which added more fun and engagement to our inflatable. We focused more on how to communicate the characteristics of our stuffed animal into the inflatables.

Since it was our first time to sew ripstop nylon, it took time to getting used to the thin texture of the material. However, we got fast as we practiced sewing machine and it was actually fun to use the sewing machine with this material. What we have done differently would be maybe experimenting more with is playing more with the placement of the threads and amount of usage.

Assignment 1- Chloe Kim & Sommer Schneller https://courses.ideate.cmu.edu/99-361/s2018a/assignment-1-chloe-kim-sommer-schneller/ Wed, 31 Jan 2018 23:23:12 +0000 https://courses.ideate.cmu.edu/99-361/s2018a/?p=227 For the first assignment, we worked with a partner to create five inflatables. Our group focused on color variation to add fun while exploring different geometric shapes and organic shapes to build inflatables. Mix-matching colorful tapes and plastic bags also encouraged us to play with pattern design throughout the project. Although cutting out plastic bag was simple and straightforward, it was hard to control scissors since they need to be cut into certain shapes such as strips, curves, and straight edge. However, as we experimented with different shapes, our challenge became part of the fun as a process to struggle and create non-leaking inflatables at last.
