Push/Pull Part 1 Lucian
This project really helped me with both my sewing skills, and which attributes of objects I find most interesting for stuffed/inflated shapes. As per usual I had the idea of making real life objects as a kind of doppelganger while also being a little(or very) silly. My first 2 items were purely inspired by the yellow fabric we had. I thought it matched very well with the color of the pin heads on all of the pins we have in the room. By making a stuffed pin I would be able to create an easily recognizable shape while also being extremely impractical due to its floppiness and size. This of course had to be followed by a pincushion. Unfortunately I didn’t check the size of the pattern before starting so I ended up with what looks more like a grape than a pincushion. I also found the concept of having 2 forms that interact very interesting so adding the tunnel all the way through was a must. I found myself very much enjoying the entire process of making the two pieces. I often found myself and others in the room laughing as I stuffed both shapes. Watching everything flop around so much was exactly the point of making them this way and I feel satisfied with the way they came out.
The last shape was inspired by starting with a simple cylinder and creating modifications through darting and also having a circular top and a square bottom. It was mostly experimentation with form and testing the differences in attributes between stuffed forms and inflated forms. Stuffed forms keep their edges and corners much better than inflated shapes. As a result I ended up with a much more bottle like shape. with the square bottom translating much better into a square-ish cross section throughout the body of the piece.
