Push/Pull Part 1 – Molly
For this project, I was really excited to begin playing around with different patterns and figuring out cool ways to manipulate them. I’ve never really gathered material before so I was excited to see the different ways I could create forms by doing so.
For my first form, I wanted to play around with human interaction, so I created a cylinder that had strings sewn in around it, allowing the user to pull the strings and change the shape. I think with this form, I could’ve benefitted from using stronger strings and maybe less stuffing so that it would’ve been easier to manipulate the form.
For my next form, I wanted to start with a cone and see how gathering could affect the shape. Ideally, I was going for a shape that I thought could be seen as sad, almost like Eeyore, so I gathered on side so it looked droopy. I noticed it had a lot of character so I added eyes and fur to help it gain its full potential.
For my final form, I wanted to continue to see how gathering one side of a form could make an organic shape. I made a cylinder and started gathering the sides, alternating which sides I gathered to make it loop in different ways.
