Idea 1: Recognizing CMU Traditions
This idea would commemorate many of the traditions and symbols that all CMU students can identify with. Some of the main ideas that come to mind center around Carnival and others are just identifiable with CMU itself. These include but aren’t limited to Buggy, Booth, the Fence, bagpipes, the kiltie band, and Carnival itself. For example, the act of a buggy being pushed could be represented by a block of color rapidly going across the bridge. Additionally, Carnival could be represented by showing a collection of vibrant colors rapidly changing, conveying the liveliness and festive spirit of Carnival.
Idea 2: Vivaldi’s Four Seasons
A series of four main scenes in succession characterized by what Vivaldi tried to convey both thematically and metaphorically in his Four Seasons. Structurally, each concerti has the pattern of the tempo going fast, slow, fast, and ideally the natural landscapes would portray the tempo visually by having idyllic scenes preceded and punctuated by moments of action. For example, consider what the accompanying sonnet describes for springtime. To begin, a landscape beginning to come to life drifts by with flowing creeks and different types of singing birds going in and out of frame with a thunderstorm in the middle, contrasting the lush landscape with its dark, foreboding, and cold coloring. Then, the slow calm scene of a sleeping dog with its owner in a spring field, followed by spring blossoming into full color. Colorwise, each of the seasons would be more or less as follows: spring would have lots of light greens and pinks, summer would have deep greens, fall would have a smattering of red, orange and yellow, and winter would be white and blue.
Idea 3: Success Story
The display would be a representation of the progression of mental illnesses/struggles like depression, anxiety, grief, etc. The show would begin with a repeated colorful and lively pattern. This pattern would gradually devolve by dropping certain aspects with each iteration, representing loss of self esteem, interests, memory, etc. Over time the pattern would lose color and order, becoming a chaotic blur of grey and black static. The show would then continue (or maybe begin) with using the same concept but in reverse, symbolizing overcoming the same mental illness/struggle, and becoming a new person in the process.
