Day 10: (Oct 1) Demo 5 Critique

Notes for 2018-10-01. See also the Fall 2018 Calendar.

Agenda

  1. Administrative
    • Who else has received their FBI results?
    • Each student will need to write to act153@andrew.cmu.edu to get a copy of their PATCH results and forward it to me.
    • Any particular topics on which you’d like more instruction or code samples?
  2. In-class
    1. Demo 5 review.
      1. As before, each pair will be responsible for leading the critique of another pair.
      2. This time, no advance explanations: the responders will test the device without hearing the intent of the authors.
      3. Everyone will formulate one observation about their experience of deception and write it down silently.
      4. Responders, please then simply describe what you see in the work.
      5. The authors will then pose an specific, unresolved question which would help further development.
      6. The responders will then ask neutral questions which may help reveal the work. Please refrain from making specific suggestions at this point; there are an infinite number of alternative decisions which could have been made, so just generating options isn’t as helpful as elucidating and developing the author’s underlying thought process.
      7. We will then follow up with a short technical critique; authors will describe their implementation strategy and identify unresolved problems.
    2. The following prompt questions may help spark your inquiries:
      1. Is it tricky? Does the deception work? Is it repeatable?
      2. Whom does the deception benefit?
      3. Where is the analog sensor? Is the continuous process centered on sensor interpretation, feedback, or something else?
