When we first walked into the room with 4th graders, the kids were watching a line diagram across a projector screen. The line would form shapes as it crossed from left to right and the teacher would ask the kids what the names of the objects being drawn were. Kids were really engaged in figuring out what the objects were and shouting out their answer loudest and first. More complicated shapes held the kids attention the longest and provided the loudest answers upon figuring it out. The kids were very proud of being able to do it on their own. Allowing them to figure it out on their own gave them a sense of autonomy which made it exciting to figure out. Initiative comes when they use their imagination to create their own answer. Industry comes with a sense of pride when they shout out their answer as being superior to everyone else’s answer. It was a very simple activity but it was clear to see the kids loved it and were very engaged and interested in it for a good 5 minutes or so.
