For the activity in the Makeshop, children could create their own art by drilling together two pieces of wood and decorating them as they pleased. Most children during this activity were driven by industry, commenting about their creation. However, there were some instances of initiative in which the child would try invent new ways to do the activity. One child, rather than completing the activity, thought of ways that it could be done without the drill. Since he understood that pushing through the wood would require a lot of force, he started listing items that he thought would be strong enough to also drill through the wood. Overall, it seemed like the children’s curiosity and creativity were most engaged when they felt like they were working on their own project, giving them the freedom to explore and think autonomously as opposed to being told what to do.
