Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs)

The lab stocks a variety of individual single-color LEDs in breadboard-compatible 3 mm and 5 mm packages. Each will need a ballast resistor to reduce the supply voltage to the operating voltage; the precise voltage and resistor value depends on the LED chemistry and color.

NeoPixel LEDs

NeoPixels are digitally-controlled RGB LEDs which follow the WS2812 three-wire protocol (power, data, ground). These use a single self-clocking data line which operates at a fixed 800 kHz rate. NeoPixel parts are most often 5V, but 12V versions do exist.

WS2801 LEDs

Digitally-controlled RGB LEDs which follow the WS2801 four-wire protocol (power, clock, data, ground). These use separate clock and data much like SPI and can operate at varied data rates up to to 25MHz.

Lasers

Laser diode, 5 milliwatt, 5 Volt, 650 nm (red). Draws a visible dot. Intended for long-distance through-beam sensing or laser show displays. Lab Part 0778.
