While conceptualizing the piece, I knew I wanted to use a conical or cylindric shape and achieve a vertical collapsing motion. After constructing and puppeting the piece, I felt as though the series of tubes alone was lackluster, so I decided to introduce slits in the fabric in order to build texture an more dimension to the piece. Upon testing this I decided to integrate a centerpiece to exist in dichotomy with the changing outer layer. When I moved to the capstan, I discovered that it was hard to balance the tension so that piece would move purely vertically and collapse into itself. However, I found the motion it produced interesting and decided to continue with that concept. I added separate motion for the piece to move vertically and to collapse/expand so that I could collapse the piece independently from moving it vertically. Additionally, I adde small moving fins to add to the aesthetics of the piece and present it as a more organic organism. When utilizing the capstan, I left the dampening low so that the motion would appear pulsating and as organic as possible. I found the hardest factor to control for was the twisting in the lines, but I felt that the motion added rather than detracted from the piece.
