The second assignment built upon the first in that we continued to explore the qualities of fabric, however this time with a secondary role of the strings manipulating it. Rather than just tying the strings to certain parts of the fabric, we sewed through it creating opportunity for shirring and gathering effects as the strings moved up and down being acted upon by the motors. Personally, in order to understand how the strings and material would respond to motor manipulation rather than hand manipulation, I decided to sew a simple running stitch on both sides of the square fabric without knots. I proceeded to set up my piece on the stands. As I was working with the drum pads, I started to create patterns, first trying each pad on its own one by one, later trying to press two at once (opposite strings and the same).
In the end, I found that the patterns I made of alternating between pressing the opposite sides created predictable yet always slightly different motions that were turbulent.
