In this assignment, I am trying to explore the possiblities that can be achieved with cording and boning. This time, I am trying to make a cylinder twist and turn. Which the cylinder would be made using boning and there will be cording channels on the fabric that cords can go through and create the effect by “shirring”.
Initially, I planned on doing cording. However, cording makes it harder to manipulate, becuase the friction is too high. The objects needs a lot more weight to be weight down than just a couple of thin washers on each side.
One of the things I didn’t expect is that the weighing of the fabric is kinda tricky. Initially, I thought it would be simple as in the lower boning area needs to be weighed down and that would solve the problem. However, since the cord is pulled from the center, as well as the diameter of the center area shrinks, the top become weightless since the cords that are being pulled up starts to contact the fabric and support its weight. I had to weight the top boning area down, hence the weight (the stationary one) in the middle.
