This is the project’s prototype of a kinetic membrane installation model utilizing digital interactive elements to control a dynamic and fluid form. It is designed by an Architecture student from Yale. The wires change according to a series of fixed pulleys that is remotely and wirelessly controlled by a computer program.
To me this is a great example of how telepresence and remote control can affect form of art work and shape people’s experience even they are physically absent. In this project, the membrane varies its position and form according to the wires attached to them. While it responds to the change of a spatial cordinate on the telecontrol, this project shows its potential to respond to other informations enable by telepresence such as sound and visual. The membrane’s unique ability to expand and shrink can correspond to varied accoustic quality such as voice volume that transported to its sensor thourgh telematic device. With the transformation of tensile structure, the membrane is able to depict certain aspects of a telematic environment.
