This project titled Mechanical Body Fan is about these semi circular fabric wings on a metal frame that extend beyond the human body, with the center being the head and shoulders. Through this bodily extension, Horn can create an infinite number of combinations of how complete the circle is.

What is interesting about Rebecca Horn’s work is how she extends the human body to interact with the world in ways that we have not previously been able to. This mechanical body fan gives the user the ability to feel the pressure of a breeze, something that is not visible other than on what it is moving. However with this, the user can feel the wind tugging at their arms and torso, making them unsteady on their feet. Other than interacting with the wind, the user can interact with others in unseen ways. Moving the mechanical body fan can generate its own breeze, allowing others around to feel its effects as well. This can give someone, especially those with a vision impairment, the ability to sense the users presence in a way other than through vision and sounds, but through touch and pressure. Especially in such a touch starved world, and especially during a pandemic, this light pressure of knowing someone is nearby is a comforting presence without the physicality.
