Day 9: (Wed Feb 14, Week 5) Silicone Bonding; Project Planning

Notes for 2024-02-14.

New Assignments

New assignment, due Monday: Part B: Means and Methods. Please post to Exercise 9 Shared Folder. You are welcome to duplicate your Exercise 8 document to start, but please create a new file for the record.

Future assignments are going to be increasingly more project-specific and take the form of weekly documentation posts. I may ask you from time to time to read a peer post and write comments.

Administrative

Please make sure you have ID card access to HL A5 for the silicone station and 3D print delivery shelves.

To 3D print project parts please use Project 3D Printer Submissions. I will occasionally clear this folder and regenerate it, so the link may change from time to time.

Agenda

  1. The first half of class we will temporarily move to HL A5:

    1. Demold any parts from Monday.

    2. Discuss options for bonding silicone parts.

    3. Review silicone mixing and pouring procedure.

    4. References: Silicone Rubber Procedure, S24 materials guide

    5. Test the stiffer Shore 20A material by pouring additional molds.

    6. Lab cleanup and storage.

  2. Mid-class break and return to HL A10.

  3. Demonstrate options for 3D printing infill density and support control in the Array Portal.

  4. Discuss Design Example: Open Molded Soft Silicone Actuator

  5. Review study plans: Exercise 8 Shared Folder.

    • multigait soft robot (pneumatics, silicone) (related: crawlers-final)

    • inflatable origami rubber structures (pneumatics, silicone)

    • articulated soft robot with internal skeleton (pneumatics, silicone, armatures)

    • shape changing interface (pneumatics, silicone, strain-limiting layers, electronics) (related: Morphing Matter Lab)

    • shape changing interface (pneumatics, tubing, fabric, electronics) (related: Open Soft Machines)

    • octopus soft actuator (pneumatics, vacuum, silicone)

    • earthworm (pneumatics, silicone tubing, case silicone)

  6. Discuss the new assignment.

  7. Individual consultations on project plans.
