Types of Finishing: Polishing, Sanding, Grinding, Shot Peening, Deburring
Most Common Uses: sandpaper, belt sander, metal file
When to Use?
- When wood edges are splintery (ex. after fresh cut)
- When metal edges have burrs (ex. after fresh cut/ machining)
- When want a specific appearance of material
- To ensure precise measurements/ meshing
- To change the “feel” of a material
- For use on wood, metal, plastics (basically any material can be modified in this way)
How to Use on Campus?
- Wood & Metal – TechSpark
- Wood – Architecture Wood Shop, Design Wood Shop
- Metal – School of Art Fabrication Spaces (DH)
How it works?
- Often reductive processes – actively remove material
- Can modify surface imperfections
- Can change chemistry/ physical properties of surfaces
- Can add new material coating to surface (wax, epoxy, paint, etc.)
