The goal of this project is to teach students about the effects of shape and construction on strength. It took several iterations of other projects to settle on this project, and so there weren’t many physical iterations of this project. Decisions about how to best make the support boxes and make the activity engaging were made just in time for Moving 4th, and were found to be relatively succesful in engaging the children that interacted with the activity. The use of dowels to make the stages variable width ended up allowing the children to anchor their paper structures on something, allowing for more creativity. This made the “reveal” at the end that something approximating cardboard was really strong in comparison with what they had made really impactful and exciting. The framing of the activity is difficult to explain to a child without leading them too much, but a lot of the children did lean towards some form of bending the paper to reinforce their structures.
