Finishing

Types of Finishing: Polishing, Sanding, Grinding, Shot Peening, Deburring

Most Common Uses: sandpaper, belt sander, metal file

When to Use?

  • When wood edges are splintery (ex. after fresh cut)
  • When metal edges have burrs (ex. after fresh cut/ machining)
  • When want a specific appearance of material
  • To ensure precise measurements/ meshing
  • To change the “feel” of a material
  • For use on wood, metal, plastics (basically any material can be modified in this way)

How to Use on Campus?

  • Wood & Metal – TechSpark
  • Wood – Architecture Wood Shop, Design Wood Shop
  • Metal – School of Art Fabrication Spaces (DH)

How it works?

  • Often reductive processes – actively remove material
  • Can modify surface imperfections
  • Can change chemistry/ physical properties of surfaces
  • Can add new material coating to surface (wax, epoxy, paint, etc.)
