Intro to Forces and Gravity

Intro to Forces & Gravity

Force: a push or a pull that causes something to move, change direction, accelerate, or stop

  • Forces come in two different types: a push and a pull
    • A push causes the box to move away from the person
    • A pull causes the box to move towards the person
  • Forces act on objects whether they are in air, water, on the ground, or anywhere else. Forces are general and apply to all objects.

  • Forces can either work together or against each other

  • The purple and pink people are working at the same time →  their forces are working together to push the car up the hill
  • Working together increases the force applied
  • The two people are pulling away from each other → their forces are working against each other
  • Working against each other decreases the force applied
  • Forces can also cause objects in motion to change direction
    • In the image, the moving ball changes direction when it is hit by the bat

Gravity:

  • Gravity is a force that always pulls things down
    • The more an object weighs, the harder gravity pulls down on the object

Keep in mind: A heavier plane will require more force to work against gravity and stay in the air
