“Playspace” by Akiva, Bingrui, and Ralph

Playspace is not so much a single event or space as it is a toolkit that mediates creative production of interactive spectacles. Our initial intent was to figure out ways of transforming a large-scale public space into a social event. We were interested in Lozano-Hemmer’s public pieces where audience participation arose organically from a simple set of mechanics. We wanted to push that interaction further by allowing the audience to dictate those mechanics through a simple setup of markers, toys, and a large-scale projection pointed at the ground. This way, the work derives its creative energy entirely from the audience, both those who directly manipulate the projection as well those who interact with the projected image, to the point that calling them the audience in a passive sense would certainly be a misnomer.
