Final Weaving -Hannah Kang

Intention:
Weaving reminded me of my mom and grandmother. It was something they used to do when I was an infant. They created personal blankets, clothing, scarves, and hats for me and my siblings through weaving, sewing, and knitting. When this project was introduced to me, it automatically reminded me of them and because I was never taught how to actually weave, I wanted to make a piece about myself but also including traits about my family. The interpretation of the weaving includes factors of my wantings. I feel that my life is very controlled and rule based on an agenda of things I have to do on a daily basis. There are restrictions all over me and I wanted to take this and reverse it in an art form. I took this idea of chance and risk taking to let the weaving flow through the warp as an abstract representation of my life’s diary.

Process:
The techniques that I used to display this idea were rya knots, loops, and horizontal/vertical lines. I also used various materials such as fabrics, pipe cleaners, scarves, and carpets to let the weaving speak more than just the comfort of dyed wool. I purposely let the ends of the weft flow out to show that not everything is perfect. I wanted to display the idea of an imperfect perfection. My life carries many flaws and there are always obstacles I need to overcome; I am still figuring things out about myself and my family is a big influence on this decision. Therefore, I decided to represent these hardships through colors and contrasts that represents my mom, dad, brother, and sister as well as myself. By combining all these elements, I wanted to blend out and contrast the colors and textures to make it into one piece.

Learning:
Some difficulties I had from this process was the limitation of the warp. If I had more skill and time, I would like to build upon this object in length, width, and height. I also thought about making this piece into a three-dimensional object. I would also include some new techniques and maybe even add objects into the weaving to show more depth and flow. I want to represent a physical journal and wavelength of my life in this piece of not only the past and present but also a possible discovery for the future.
